I’ve worked at Tunstall for 11 years, and I’ve seen a lot of changes, especially over the last year or so. When I first started we were in a much smaller space which made it more difficult to organise, and using old fashioned computers with enormous monitors. We deal with hundreds of deliveries every week, and they can contain anything from batteries, to stationery, to literature and of course the raw materials for the factory.

There are a number of regular deliveries, as well as a couple of one offs. Last year we introduced a new booking in system, using a database and labelling system to log everything in and out. We also rearranged the racking, and started to use colour coding to make it easier to process goods. More recently we’ve started to use a barcode scanner which has made things even faster and more accurate.

All these improvements have meant that as deliveries ease off towards the end of the week we have more time to look at other ways we can streamline the way we work, and align ourselves to the lean manufacturing methods that have been adopted in production.

Most of us in Goods In have worked here for quite a long time, and it’s great because everyone knows what they’re doing and we all get on really well. That’s one of the things that’s been especially good about all the improvements in the last year; we’ve all pulled together and as well as making things more efficient, it’s also a nicer place to work.
